Barnes & Noble set for summer 2024 opening, but Din Tai Fung could be 2025


Contrary to some frivolous posting on social media, both the eagerly-awaited Din Tai Fung restaurant and the Barnes & Noble bookstore are still on course to open outlets in Downtown Santa Monica.



Home Depot sales fall in Q1 on soft housing market

 

The Home Depot’s first-quarter net sales fell 2.3% to $36.4 billion from $37.3 billion a year ago, the company said on Tuesday. Comparable sales in Q1 decreased 2.8%, with a U.S. comparable sales decrease of 3.2%, and net earnings declined 7% to $3.6 billion from $3.9 billion year over year. 

 


Krispy Kreme’s Fresh Doughnut Delivery Network Will Get A Lot Bigger


As a refresher, the doughnut chain uses a hub-and-spoke model in which production centers (hubs) distribute fresh doughnuts daily to several points of access (spokes). Krispy Kreme defines points of access as anywhere fresh doughnuts or cookies (Insomnia Cookies) can be bought: hot light theater shops, fresh shops, carts, food trucks, DFD Doors (i.e. convenience stores, restaurants, gas stations, pharmacies), and cookie stores. 



Whole Foods plans to open 30 stores a year

 

Whole Foods Market CEO Jason Buechel says the company is moving forward with its plan to open 30 stores a year, some of which will be in new formats like its smaller footprint Daily Shop stores. 



Dutch Bros off to ‘strong start’ as same-store sales jump 10%; to open 150-165 shops


Dutch Bros Inc. reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue amid expansion into new markets, record-breaking system average unit volume and new product launches.The fast-growing drive-thru coffee chain opened a record 45 shops across 14 states during its first quarter — the 11th consecutive quarter of 30 or more new shop openings — of which 40 were company-operated.



Weis Markets posts Q1 sales gains, cites profit pressures

 

Weis Markets said same-store sales excluding fuel were up 3.3% in the first quarter, boosted by the early Easter holiday this year, but net income slipped 10.3% compared with year-ago results.

Kohl’s opening in-store Babies”R”Us shops in 33 states; releases map with locations


Kohl's Corp. will start the rollout of in-store Babies"R"Us shops in August.The department store retailer said it the openings will continue opening through fall, with all 200 shops open in time for the holidays. Kohl’s first announced the partnership with Babies"R"Us owner WHP Global in March.

In this past year’s QSR Drive-Thru Report, we got off the track a bit. In addition to mystery shopping 10 of America’s top chains, rolling through drive-thrus and recording everything from speed to tech upgrades to friendliness, as QSR always has, we decided, along with our partner Intouch Insight, to give some of the most-innovative builds a spin (Taco Bell’s Defy, McDonald’s conveyor-belt prototype in Fort Worth, Texas, and a Chick-fil-A deploying robotics in Alpharetta, Georgia). The motivation was straightforward. If there is one area of the industry COVID-19 tossed kindling under, it was the asset evolution of quick-service restaurants.
